paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines211 - : Thanks to the use of computational means, there are different lines of research nowadays in the field of the so called corpus linguistics, which describe authentic texts from linguistic features. The criticism that has been made to such studies is founded on the fact that they only reach the word level with scarce impact on the textual level. In this work, we critically revised different feature matrices and methodologies that have been used for studying Spanish and English, in order to propose a matrix that can deal with part of the criticism made to previous researches. Concretely, the proposal is based on the following components: the organization modes of discourse, the sequences or lexical bundles, the Model of Event indexing and the Appraisal Theory . In addition, a component associated with grammatical categories, a component of syntactic units, and a component of statistics measures will be included. Finally we will also consider a component derived from a previous project (the

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines309 - : With the demise of formalism in linguistics, education of mother tongue and foreign language needs revising. Formal trends fall short of the two major challenges in education today: making students fit to operate in a multilingual world and making them proficient for using language -both L1 and L2- in society, that is, having a full grasp of academic and professional genres. This article makes an actual proposal of curriculum innovation that takes genres -with a nod to the systemic functional theory behind it- as the ultimate unit in language programming and that is being embraced in some parts of Europe under the label: 'integrated language curriculum' . A historical review, a cognitive account based on language information processing, and some structure for classroom implementation are also considered.

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines319 - : In order to account for these facts and for the interpretation of other indefinites, Diesing (1992) and Kratzer (1995) propose that the semantic IL/SL distinction follows from differences in argument structure. Specifically, Kratzer (1995) argues that Diesing´s (1992) proposal that subjects of ILPs and SLPs may be in different syntactic positions is a consequence of a difference in argument structure: SLPs have an extra argument position for events or spatio-temporal locations while ILPs do not . They both assume Heim´s (1982) proposal that i) indefinites are open formulas that contain a free variable that undergoes an operation of existential closure and ii) that sentences are mapped to a tripartite Logical Form that consists of a quantifier, a restrictive clause and a nuclear scope. For Diesing (1992) material from the VP is mapped into the nuclear scope where the variable undergoes existential closure while the material from the IP is mapped into a restrictive clause and, if there is not

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines371 - : Teacher educators in particular need to explore the potential that multimodality can offer second or foreign language learning (Farías, Obilinovic & Orrego, 2007, 2011). Plass and Jones (2005) have contributed to the dialog of second language learning and multimodality by postulating a model that integrates these two fields. In their analysis they adopt Mayer’s model of multimedia learning and they take elements from both Chapelle’s and Ellis’s SLA models. The essential question that motivates their proposal and also is an impetus in ours is: “In what way can multimedia support second-language acquisition by providing comprehensible input, facilitating meaningful interaction, and eliciting comprehensible output ?” (Plass & Jones, 2005: 471).

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines377 - : Abstract: To identify the genres that open access to disciplinary knowledge and to describe their prototypical features, assuming their multisemiotic status, are fundamental tasks in order to understand the functioning of academic discourse and the discourse processes through which students become members of a particular academic community. In this context, we are interested in the access to specialized knowledge in Economics through an academic genre: the university Textbook. The objectives of this study are to identify and describe the multisemiotic artifacts that help construct meaning in ten textbooks that introduce first year students to the study of Economics. Besides, we aim at determining the frequency of occurrence of these artifacts in the corpus. The application of Parodi’s (2010a) methodological proposal helped identify seven artifacts: Statistics Complex, Diagram, Formula, Graphic, Icon, Illustration, and Table . The findings show that the academic Economics discourse that is

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines382 - : Starting from Goffman’s (1972, 1981) distinction between ‘direct participants’, ‘side participants’ and ‘overhearers’ further development of dialogue roles, i.e. participants vs. non- participants, Ilie (2010a) develops a corresponding taxonomy of parliamentary participant roles and institutional identities. Parliamentary discourse may be analysed following Ilie’s (2010a) proposal of discourse frames: spatial-temporal, participant and interaction . When it comes to the participant frames, it is worth mentioning that, apart from deputies and senators, other overhearers may attend the sessions: representatives of the Government, representatives of the mass-media or ordinary citizens. The most important person during the session is the President of the Chamber of Deputies as he/she presents the agenda, establishes the order for voting, chairs the proceedings, gives the floor to speakers, moderates the debate, makes sure that the debates are orderly organized.

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines556 - : In this paper, we analyze a 500,000-words corpus of WhatsApp messages in Catalan, produced by young couples aged between 18 and 22 years old. The aim of the resercah is to describe its proximity to the colloquial conversation genre and to define the WhatsApp message genre from the point of view of its connexion to the oral-written medium, following Gregory and Carroll (1978). To do so, we contrasted the corpus obtained with the characteristics of the genre colloquial conversation previously described by other researchers. The results show that WhatsApp messages are close to colloquial conversation. Finally, we propose that a new category should be added to Gregory and Carroll’s proposal (1978): a written genre conceived as if it were a spontaneous conversation .

paper corpusSignosTxtLongLines577 - : Regarding RQ2: ‘What is the discourse style of crowdfunding projects in terms of grammatical complexity, elaboration and degree of explicitness of meanings?’, this exploratory study strongly suggests that grammar is a key language variable that shapes the discourse style of this genre and, above all, that language forms “functionally match the requirements” of a particular situation (^[131]Biber & Conrad, 2019). Supporting the claim that emerging genres in the Internet draw on features of existing genres (^[132]Herring, 2013; ^[133]Giltrow, 2017), the discourse style of the proposals proved to be to some extent similar to that of an already existing genre, the research project proposal: a style characterised by structurally complex grammar patterns that convey information very explicitly and, therefore, a style strongly associated with densification and economy . This is precisely the style of informational registers in English and Spanish (^[134]Biber et al., 1999; ^[135]Parodi, 2010,
