Crystal (2004) states that the ratio of native to non-native speakers of English is around 1:3, which has changed the panorama of the phonological field. Because of the considerable number of non-native speakers of English around the world, the standard sounds and patterns of English have changed. Consequently, speakers no longer need to sound native-like to be considered as intelligible.
