paper CL_LiteraturayLingüísticatxt543 - : The rejecting peer review reports: its microvariation according to the type of referees

2
paper CL_LiteraturayLingüísticatxt543 - : We analyzed reports in which it was recommended to reject the publication of manuscripts sent to a Chilean humanities journal. We sought to establish whether these reports varied according to two attributes of the referees: the number of publications and the type of participation in the journal . The results show that, regardless of their status, when rejecting an article of scientific research, the referees make evaluations centered on the article as a unit. Descriptions, descriptions of errors, and descriptions of what is missing are the most frequent communicative purposes in this genre.

5
paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt95 - : Few studies in Colombia have explored and compared students' reading comprehension processes in EFL, in different modalities of instruction. This article reports on some findings of a larger study in which two groups of graduate Law students took a reading comprehension course in English, delivered in two different modalities of instruction: face-to-face and web-based . Both courses were served by an English teacher from the School of Languages at Universidad de Antioquia. The data gathered from class observations, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, tests, the teacher's journal and data records in the platform provided insights about the students' use of reading and language learning strategies in both modalities. Findings suggest that students applied the reading strategies explicitly taught during the courses and some language learning strategies for which they did not receive any instruction.

paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt178 - : In a broader sense, Altenberg (1991) also contributes with an accessible specified corpus for collocation-related studies and reports on an investigation on reoccurring collections associated to intensifiers: amplifiers and downtoners . All the aforesaid studies suggest a need for modeling and acquiring the collocations which modify degree as holistic units.

9
paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt222 - : The present article reports on an action research study that explores the implications of applying three vocabulary strategies: word cards, association with pictures, and association with a topic through fables in the acquisition of new vocabulary in a group of EFL low-level proficiency teenagers in a public school in Espinal, Tolima, Colombia . The participants had never used vocabulary strategies to learn and recall words. Two types of questionnaires, a researcher's journal, and vocabulary tests were the instruments used to gather data. The results showed that these strategies were effective to expand the range of words progressively and improve the ability to recall them. The study also found that these strategies involve cognitive and affective factors that affect students' perception about the learning of vocabulary. The implementation highlighted the need to train teachers and learners in strategies intended to teach and learn vocabulary and to subsequently include them in the English

paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt241 - : Since the moment Skype appeared, there have been various studies examining its impact in ELT environments and its efficacy has been demonstrated. ^[29]Doughty and Long (2003) , for example, assert that Skype lets students interrelate, change, and refine their input. ^[30]Godwin-Jones (2005) highlights that one of the major benefits of Skype is that it provides “additional channels for oral communication” (p. 9). paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt8 - : Regarding the small-scale projects reports, a common characterization of an effective evaluation resulting from this activity developed in the seminar has been as follows: evaluation means collecting, organizing, analyzing, and reporting data about a number of features of an ELT curriculum and its impact on its actors for decision purposes . The following sample of the pedagogical implications section in one participant's written report evidences this idea:

19
paper CO_ColombianAppliedLinguisticsJournaltxt186 - : This paper reports on a mixed-method action research study carried out with participants from three public high schools in different regions in Colombia: Bogotá, Orito, and Tocaima . The overall aim of this study was to analyze whether training in the use of metacognitive strategies (MS) through learning journals could improve the participants' vocabulary learning. The data, collected mainly through students' learning journals, teachers' field notes, questionnaires and mind maps, was analyzed following the principles of grounded theory. The results suggested that the training helped participants to develop metacognitive awareness of their vocabulary learning process and their lexical competence regarding daily routines. Participants also displayed some improvements in critical thinking and self-directed attitudes that could likewise benefit their vocabulary learning. Finally, the study proposes that training in metacognitive and vocabulary strategies should be implemented in language

paper CO_CuadernosdeLingüísticaHispánicatxt151 - : Recent data indicate that there is a large population of Spanish Heritage Learners (HLs) in postsecondary institutions in the U.S. (National Center for Education Statistics ^[28][NCES], 2017). However, only 40% of institutions offer at least one course for this student population (^[29]Beaudrie, 2012). This situation forces HLs to take language courses designed for Spanish second language learners (i.e., mixed classes). This article reports a study that was carried out to answer the following research questions: a ) what roles do instructors assign to HLs in their beginner classes, and b) how do these observed roles support the HL language instruction goals and meet their needs for cultural connection? Results indicate that teachers assign a variety of roles to heritage learners in their beginner Spanish classes. These roles include serving as a language model or informant in terms of linguistic, pragmatic or cultural knowledge, translating and tutoring. The assigned roles could support or

paper CO_Lenguajetxt74 - : Illuminated by an action research approach which aimed to explore the use of reflection to support novice teachers' cognition process as they grapple with SLA theory, a case study design was adopted since it reports findings from a bounded system (Creswell, 2007) and a specific group of participants: all the registered students were invited to participate . Data collection involved reflection journals, a survey administered at the beginning and at the end of the course and a report about an observed class. Information gathered was analyzed and triangulated to prevent the formulation of hasty conclusions (Diaz, Alarcón, & Ortiz, 2012).

24
paper CO_Íkalatxt206 - : During the students' compositions and oral reports, the researcher detected different mistakes in the students' production, such as: language structure, use of connectors, and conjugation, among others . However, these mistakes generally occur in students' learning processes but do not interrupt their communication, as can be observed in the following student artifact: "The people didn't know what was happening Dorian in house, because he had parties, invite woman beautiful leave and drink too much alcohol, have disorganized life" (Artifact, student 9, 21-05-14).

paper corpusSignostxt364 - : Close analysis of CSR reports from PetroChina reveals a not entirely unexpected mixing of promotional elements in the reporting discourse, which seems to flout the basic principles laid out in GCRIAR: ‘understandability’, ‘reliability’ and ‘variability’ . A number of recent studies in critical discourse analysis (Fairclough, 1993) and genre analysis (Bhatia, 2005) indicate that promotional discourse has become an incredibly versatile genre, gradually influencing/invading other genres, both academic as well as professional. Promotional discourse has thus become ‘a subtle art form rather than traditional hard selling’ (Bhatia, 2005). Frankental (2001: 20) similarly mentions,
